Approved the following statement to be presented to the Assembly and Provost:

Recommendation for Re-examining Evaluation of Teaching at EOU
The Academic Standards Committee recently discussed the evaluation of teaching methods at Eastern Oregon University. We strongly feel the current process is flawed and needs to be revamped. However, this task is beyond the scope of this committee so we suggest the appointment of an appropriate authority to oversee a re-examination of the teaching evaluation process. We recommend focusing on the following areas:

  • Evaluation instruments: student survey of teaching
  • Peer and dean observation of teaching
  • Protocols for evaluations and handling of instruments
  • More objective criteria for and processes of evaluation
  • Utilizing components of effective assessment models at other universities
  • Frequency of evaluation
  • Consistency and integration related to distance education teaching evaluation

Anna Maria Dill reported, based on anecdotal information, that the new academic intervention program is benefiting students on academic probation. The committee agreed that help is needed to gather statistical data related to student retention and progress following hearings and interventions. This will help guide future decisions regarding the effectiveness of strategies for students in academic peril.

Agreed to re-examine the Graduation with Distinction policy during the 2005-06 school year.

Expressed and discussed concern over the methods of evaluation of teaching at Eastern Oregon University. Agreed that the revamping of this process was well beyond the capability of the committee, but useful recommendations could be provided by the committee.
