CHEM 101, 102, 103 INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY (4) (General Ed.)
Service and general education courses covering basic principles of general chemistry. Designed for students without previous chemistry experience. Three hours of lecture and one 2-hour lab.
Prerequisite: MATH 070 or equivalent.
CHEM 204, 205 GENERAL CHEMISTRY (5) (General Ed.)
Principles of chemistry for chemistry majors and related fields: Physics, engineering, biology, medicine, etc. Three hours of lecture and two 3-hour labs.
Prerequisites: High school chemistry or consent of instructor and MATH 111 (may be taken concurrently) or equivalent.
CHEM 206 QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS (5) (General Ed.)
Chemistry of selected metallic, non-metallic elements, and the semi-micro qualitative analysis of those elements. Chemical equilibrium of inorganic systems is also discussed. Three hours of lecture and two 3-hour labs.
Prerequisite: CHEM 205 or equivalent.
CHEM 210 SELECTED TOPICS (1-6)
Topics designed to meet current needs of students. Specific titles to be selected by the chemistry staff.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor.
CHEM 285 CHEMICAL SAFETY (1)
CA course that emphasizes current, safe practices in the undergraduate chemical laboratory. Designed for students in chemistry and related fields. Provides training in the safe use and disposal methods for chemicals, for containers of chemicals, and in the handling of specialized equipment required for doing chemistry. A required course for our laboratory assistants.
Prerequisite: None, but undergraduate experience in chemistry is assumed.
CHEM 310 SELECTED TOPICS (1-6)
Topics designed to meet current needs of students. Specific titles to be selected by the chemistry staff.
Prerequisite: Junior standing or consent of instructor.
CHEM 320 ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (3)
Fundamental principles of quantitative analysis with emphasis on selected gravimetric and volumetric methods. An introduction to instrumental methods is included. Three hours of lecture.
Prerequisite: CHEM 206 or equivalent.
CHEM 321 ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY LAB (2)
Quantitative analytical laboratory experiments with emphasis on gravimetric, volumetric, and a limited number of instrumental methods. Two three-hour labs.
Prerequisite: CHEM 320 or concurrent.
CHEM 334, 335, 336 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (4)
Introductory study of the molecular structure, chemical properties and reaction mechanisms of organic substances. Includes problems in organic synthesis. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisite: CHEM 205 or equivalent.
CHEM 338 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB I (1)
Selected techniques of organic and biochemical analysis, separation and synthesis. Offers experience in performing organic and biochemical reactions and in using apparatuses and instruments that pertain to organic and biochemistry. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisite: CHEM 335 or concurrent.
CHEM 339 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB II (1)
Introductory study of the molecular structure, chemical properties and reaction mechanisms of organic substances. Includes problems in organic synthesis. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisite: CHEM 336 or concurrent.
CHEM 360 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY (4)
Introduction to environmental chemistry covering both fundamental chemical principles and societal implications. Emphasis will be placed on air chemistry and air pollution, chemistry of natural waters and water pollution, soils and sediments, and toxicity of organic and inorganic chemicals. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisite: CHEM 206 or equivalent.
CHEM 361 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY (1)
Introduction to environmental chemistry laboratory techniques covering aspects of sampling, instrumental and automated analysis, and regulatory requirements. This course includes a service-learning component that exposes students to real world environmental problems. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisite: CHEM 360 or concurrent.
CHEM 401 RESEARCH (1-3) (CAPSTONE)
Individual research project selected with and supervised by a member of the chemistry faculty.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
CHEM 405 READING AND CONFERENCE (1-6)
Individual or small group study of a chemistry topic not included in the regular curriculum, supervised by a member of the chemistry faculty.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor
CHEM 407 SEMINAR (1) (CAPSTONE) (WRITING INTENSIVE)
Individual student selected topics in chemistry are researched thoroughly. This accumulation of research data is then presented in both a professional research paper and an oral presentation.
Prerequisite: Senior standing or consent of instructor.
CHEM 410 SELECTED TOPICS (1-6)
Designed to offer special topics of interest, such as Advanced Organic Synthesis, Advanced Spectroscopy, Polymers, Nanotechnology, Scientific Glassblowing, etc.
Prerequisite: See instructor.
CHEM 411 INORGANIC CHEMISTRY (4)
Chemical bonding, symmetry, coordination chemistry, molecular orbitals, transition metals, lanthanides and actinides. Four hours of lecture. Prerequisite: CHEM 206.
CHEM 412 INORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB (1) (WRITING INTENSIVE)
Survey of inorganic materials synthesis techniques to study inorganic structures through synthesis, characterization, and model construction. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisite: CHEM 206; co-requisite: CHEM 411.
CHEM 421 INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS (3) (WRITING INTENSIVE)
The theory and practice of analytical chemistry as applied to instrumental methods of analysis. Advantages and limitations of instrumental methods will be discussed. Three hours of lecture.
Prerequisite: CHEM 320.
CHEM 422 INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS LAB (2)
Laboratory experiments focus on instrumental methods of analysis, optimization of instrumental parameters and data analysis. Two three-hour labs.
Prerequisite: CHEM 421 or concurrent.
CHEM 440 THERMODYNAMICS (4) (WRITING INTENSIVE)
The study of chemical systems from thermodynamics, equilibrium and phase rule perspectives. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisite: CHEM 206 and calculus.
CHEM 441 QUANTUM MECHANICS (4) (WRITING INTENSIVE)
Classical waves, quantum physics of atoms, molecules, and particles. Applications to spectroscopy. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisites: PHYS 223, CHEM 440, and MATH 254 or consent of instructor.
CHEM 442 CHEMICAL DYNAMICS (4) (WRITING INTENSIVE)
Kinetics, mechanisms, the solid state and symmetry elements, surface chemistry and electrochemistry. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisites: CHEM 206.
CHEM 443 THERMODYNAMICS LAB (1)
Selected experiments to exemplify topics in thermodynamics. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisite: CHEM 440 or concurrent.
CHEM 444 QUANTUM MECHANICS LAB (1)
Laboratory experiences contributing to the study of quantum mechanics. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisites: CHEM 441 or concurrent.
CHEM 445 CHEMICAL DYNAMICS LAB (1)
Selected experiments to exemplify topics in chemical dynamics. One three-hour lab.
Prerequisites: CHEM 442 or concurrent.
CHEM 450 STRUCTURAL BIOCHEMISTRY (4)
Survey of the structures and functions of biological macromolecules and their building blocks; structure and functionality of cell membranes; enzyme catalysis and kinetics. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisites: CHEM 336 or equivalent.
CHEM 451 METABOLIC BIOCHEMISTRY (4)
Provides a chemical perspective of bioenergetics and metabolic pathways including signal transduction. Specific topics, discussed at the molecular level, are selected from, but not limited to the following: carbohydrate, lipid and protein biosynthesis processing; electron transport, proton pumping and ATP production in mitochondria and chloroplasts; mechanisms of biosignaling. Four hours of lecture.
Prerequisites: CHEM 450.
CHEM 454 BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY (2)
Introduction of standard biochemical laboratory techniques and their application to solving biochemical problems. One six-hour lab.
Prerequisites: CHEM 450 or consent of instructor.
