The title of the presentation is "Weapons of Mass Salvation." An article on this topic is linked to this article. . About Dr. Sachs Dr. Sachs was cited in The New York Times Magazine as "probably the most important economist in the world." Prior to his appointment at Columbia, Dr. Sachs was Director of the Center for International Development at Harvard University. He has served as an economic advisor to governments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa, and has been a consultant to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the OECD, and the United Nations Development Program. In January 2002, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Professor Sachs his Special Advisor on the Millennium Development Goals. In an invited article in the Oct. 24, 2002 issue of The Economist, entitled "Weapons of Mass Salvation," Dr. Sachs argued that "united action against poverty and disease was the most effective means of advancing U.S. interests in the world, even in combatting terrorism." He will discuss this in the videoconference, which will be conducted simultaneously in Portland, La Grande, and Seattle, Wash. Dr. Sachs will take questions from individuals in each city after the talk. Associated story links: |
