Course Description:

Music Theory 1 is a part of the core curriculum for music majors and minors at EOU. It undertakes to acquire a working knowledge and understanding of the basic materials and harmonic practices of western music.

1. Elements of Pitch
1) Notation
2) Key signatures and scales
3) Intervals

2. Elements of Rhythm
1) Rhythm, Tempo, Meter
2) Simple Time signatures
3) Compound Time signatures
 

3. Triads and Seventh Chords
1) M,,m, x, o  triads
2) VII chords
3) Inversions
4) Symbols and figured bass
5) Lead sheet symbols

4. Diatonic Chords
1) in major
2) in minor
3) diatonic VII chords in major
4) in minor
 

Assignments: Written work is due at the beginning of each class unless otherwise arranged. Late work will be accepted until the following class meeting, but will be penalized by one letter grade. Late work will not be accepted any later than two class meetings after its assigned date.

Arrangement may be made to redo assignments (at the discretion of the instructor) to improve a grade. Assignments for extra credit may be negotiated.

Tests:  A final exam is scheduled by the Registrar's Office on Wed. Dec.6 from 10-12.  The midterm is scheduled for Wed. Nov.1 in our regular class period. Shorter tests may occur at anytime throughout the term, with or without prior notice. Tests may not be made up, except in cases of certified illness or prior arrangement with the instructor.

Attendance:Irregular attendance will adversely affect grades. Instructor should be advised previous to any missed class in person, by email or by voice mail.

Grading:
  Class work and assignments:  45%
  Mid-term:  25%
  Final Exam: 30%

Note: Missed assignments and tests will receive a grade of zero except in cases of certified illness or by prior arrangement with the instructor.

Dead Week: Review/ Pop Quizes may be given which will be figured into term grade.

Quiz ( Chapter 3)

Assignment: Set an examination to be given to classmates, on Chapters 1-3. You need to hand in 2 copies of this exam, one of which will be passed out to a fellow student. Must be legible and neat.. Tests will be written during class period.

The mark received on this test will be averaged in with the mark you received on your midterm. This is not mandatory but advisable for those of you who wish to improve your grade on last week's test. Please note that the grade received on this makeup will not replace the previous midterm grade. The two tests will be averaged to come up with  your final mid-term grade.
