Course Description:

Aural skills is a part of the core curriculum for music majors and minors at EOU. Its focus is on sight singing, rhythmic studies, and melodic and harmonic dictation. Music114 is a continuation of Music 112.
Tues. classes will concentrate on aural skills, while Thurs, classes will primarily involve Sight Singing.

Course Objectives:

           1) To recognize aurally the basic intervals and chords (major, minor, augmented, diminished and perfect)
           2) To sing at sight melodies in major and minor modes, using tonic soh-fa system (movable doh).
           3) To sight read rhythmic notation.
           4) To write intervals, chords, melodies and rhythms from dictation.
 

Assignments: Written work is due at the beginning of each class unless otherwise arranged. Late work will be accepted until the following class meeting, but will be penalized by one letter grade. Late work will not be accepted any later than two class meetings after its assigned date.

Arrangement may be made to redo assignments (at the discretion of the instructor) to improve a grade. Assignments for extra credit may be negotiated.

Much of the assigned work consists of practice and drilled exercises to be graded at each class in participatory activities.
 

Tests: A final exam has been scheduled by the Registrar's Office for Friday, March 23, 10:00-12:00. This time is negotiable. Mid term tests (practical and written) are scheduled for the week of Feb. 12 during class time and at individually appointed times. Shorter tests may occur at anytimethroughout the term, with or without prior notice. Tests may not be made up, except in cases of certified illness or prior arrangement with the instructor.

Attendance: Irregular attendance will adversely affect grades. Class work and participatory attendance are heavily weighted in this class.
If you are going to be absent from a class please inform the instructor personally,by email or voice mail.

Grading:

Class work and assignments (including tests): 30%
Mid óterm: 30%
Final Exam: 40%

Note: Missed assignments and tests will receive a grade of zero except in cases of certified illness or by prior arrangement with the instructor.
