MINUTES
NEW BUSINESS
Minutes from last meeting approved with correction of Vice President Morgan's title.
New 801s (Workman Comp report)
-Employee got metal sliver in his eye. No time loss. Committee discussed
safety goggles and when they are appropriate. Noted that many of the cheaper
types can do more harm than good.
-Employee strained back and irritated a chronic problem. No time loss.
New Safety Grams
-8th Street snow removal is very dangerous. Plows and gravel spreaders slip
and slide and it is very difficult to get traction.
-Entrances ramps to Quinn get very icy in the winter and cannot be salted
due to the possibility of tracking the material inside, thus damaging the
gym floor.
Bob Gilmore distributed a handout outlining some of the safety procedures he has/is implementing in the Loso Hall shop areas. Training and demonstration of competency is required before any of the equipment can be used.
Irene talked with Rob Cashell regarding the importance of being an active member of the Safety Committee. Rob said that he did want to stay on the committee and would make a major effort to attend every meeting. He also offered to have a colleague from Athletics attend in the event that he was not available for an occasional meeting. Irene agreed to give it another try but stressed that if it does not work out, we will need to find a member from Athletics who is able to take an active part in the work of the committee.
OLD BUSINESS
Mike Rhodes contacted Irene regarding the 8th Street hill and grand staircase issues. He gave several suggestions ranging from doing nothing at all to completely closing access to the north end of campus from 8th Street to 10th Street. His recommended solution is to close the grand staircase and the sidewalk on the west side of 8th Street hill. 8th Street hill would also be closed to sledding and a handrail would be installed on the sidewalk on the east side of the street. Mike indicated that he didn't think that Eastern's boilers would support installing a heated sidewalk on 8th Street hill.
Weapons policy and the committee's recommendation for improving safety on 8th Street hill was taken before the cabinet. No action was taken on the 8th Street hill issue. Vice President Shelton will take the policy to the students for input. A concern was that if the policy includes requiring a trigger lock on weapons left in vehicles then it would have to be enforced. Otherwise the trigger lock statement should be deleted. John Barresse recommended that the trigger lock statement be left in and that security be given authority to issue citations to violators. Irene will pursue the issue with the cabinet.
Helen discussed the "Let There Be Light" tour scheduled for October 29th at 6:00pm. The President's Commission on the Status of Women is sponsoring the tour in conjunction with the Safety Committee. Helen will inform the cabinet of the tour, get maps distributed and coordinate the actual tour. John, Sue Cain, and Vickie will be able to participate, as well. Irene indicated that she would be available if she were needed.
Next meeting is scheduled for November 19, 2002 at 2:00pm.
