NEW BUSINESS
Minutes from last meeting approved as submitted.
New 801s (Workman Comp report)
-None.
Non-801s
-The previous claim regarding a fall that wasn't reported promptly was investigated
and denied by SAIF. It could not be determined that the fall caused the
injury and was not a result of previous injury.
New Safety Grams
-None
Ryan Platt asked that the committee consider the safety issues involved with the cement border surrounding the new sand volleyball court. When students are playing volleyball, there is a considerable danger of someone tripping on the border or falling and hitting their head on the border. Some options for reducing the hazard include, installing a rubber or plastic cover over the border. Another option would be to raise the level of the sand, but this could allow for sand to spill over the border. Ryan will research these and other options and report back to the committee.
Irene and Helen attended training sessions offered by OSHA and reported back to the committee regarding some of the information they received.
Irene shared some information on hazard ID and hazard control training. She reported that there are definite rules regarding Safety Committees, how often meetings are to be held and who should be included in the membership.
Irene also informed the committee that all buildings should be inspected once a quarter. We will start with committee inspections once per year and possibly ask Security to do one each quarter. An inspection of Loso Hall is scheduled for 2:00pm on April 29, 2003. We should meet outside the Arts & Sciences Office. Irene will develop an inspection checksheet that outlines what we should look for, but stressed that common sense is often the best guide. Irene will have an itinerary for future inspections prepared for next month's meeting.
Helen shared some information regarding how meetings should be conducted and the importance of proper agendas and minutes. She said, for the most part, this committee is doing a good job of meeting the requirements.
Bob asked for information regarding how other state institutions handle training in the use of power tools and safety materials and how they control their use. Irene and Bob will pursue and report back to the committee.
OLD BUSINESS
Old Safety Grams
-Gravel (free) parking lot issue. Curbs have been painted.
-A safe place to park the food service golf cart has not been found but
Bob reported that it didn't look like it had been moved all winter. The
old restroom/concession area at the stadium still looks like the best possibility
(as soon as the stadium renovation is completed). Bob will continue to keep
the committee informed of the status.
-Bob talked with Avista Utilities regarding a barrier around the Loso Hall
gas meter. Avista will work with Bob to get the barrier installed.
Next meeting is scheduled for May 13, 2003 at 2:00pm.
