MINUTES
September 15, 2002
Present: Irene Jerome, Helen Moore, Sue Rayburn, Linda Overlock, Bob Gilmore, Sue Cain and Jeff McDonald.
Absent: Vickie Lee, Rob Cashell and John Barresse
NEW BUSINESS
Minutes from last meeting approved with correction noting member's absence.
New 801s (Workman Comp report) Irene explained Workman's Comp
procedures to Bob Gilmore as it pertains to his position as the Loso Shop
Tech. She will follow up with additional training.
-Employee had an allergic reaction to multiple bee stings that occurred
when the employee lifted the lid on a garbage can. There was time loss.
-Employee strained back.
New Safety Grams
-Sprinkler hole in lawn next to the NW corner of the sidewalk that runs
between Inlow and the Quad has no lid on it. Security was notified and a
cone has been placed over the hazard until a cover can be found for the
hole.
Bob mentioned a possible hazard with some new methods being used in metal casting area of the art department in Loso Hall. Some of the methods are using silica dust. Bob is working with the art faculty to insure that all safety precautions are being observed.
Irene will serve as interim safety officer until a permanent replacement for Travis Taylor can be found.
Day shift Security Officer will join the safety committee.
Irene and Bob will visit with Rob Cashell regarding the importance of being an active member of this committee. If Rob is unable to attend future meetings on a regular basis, they will suggest that another member of the Physical Education department take his place on the committee. Linda suggested that Ben Welch might be a good candidate.
Irene asked that committee members begin to consider holding elections for a new safety committee chair.
OLD BUSINESS
Old Safety Grams
-Employee cut arm with a hedge trimmer that did not have a guard on the
blade. The trimmer is being replaced with a model that meets safety standards.
-Nothing has been done regarding the "slippery when wet" problem with the
temporary handicap ramp at the Badgley Hall entrance. Sue will send a request
to Plant Service asking for that non-skid strips be placed on the plywood
ramp.
-Irene will follow-up on the tripping hazard in the asphalt in the Badgley
Hall parking lot. As of the date of this meeting, no corrective action has
been taken.
-Sue and Bob informed the committee that the hazardous materials clean up
in the Loso Hall art area is continuing and nearly complete.
-8th Street hill issue is being revisited. Physical Plant personnel have
also expressed concern over the problem of trying to keep the sidewalk safely
cleared of snow. Irene will follow-up with Vice President Morgan to determine
the outcome of the heated sidewalk as a possible solution.
Next meeting is scheduled for October 15, 2002 at 2:00pm.
